Photo of "Tree of Hope" sculpture and artist Algernon Miller

Tree of Hope
Sculptor Algernon Miller, 1972, restored 2004
Center median at Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard at
131st Street, Manhattan
Painted steel

This brightly colored painted steel sculpture is almost abstract. It commemorates the original "Tree of Hope," a talisman to those who performed at the nearby Lafayette Theater, and also honors its champion, entertainer BIll "Bojangles" Robinson.
