Street Tree Inventory Project
The City of New York Parks & Recreation is seeking summer interns to assist in a citywide street tree census. Parks & Recreation cares for approximately 500,000 street trees in the five boroughs of New York City . In 1995 the agency conducted the first ever inventory of its curbside trees and now, ten years later it is time for the next census. The census is an effort to enumerate the location, condition, size, and species of every tree growing within the public right of way in New York City . The goals of the census are to heighten public awareness of the benefits of trees, promote education and citizen involvement, quantify the value of the of the urban forest, analyze changes to the urban forest over time, and collect new data using the most current technologies available.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Use hand-held computers to collect data on curbside trees growing in all five boroughs of NYC. The data includes, but is not limited to, tree species, condition, size, location, and site conditions. Interns will be assigened tree survey zones and will be expected to take public transportation to assigned work areas. Interns will work in pairs. The job is ideal for sudents seeking a summer project that might extend into an independent study class for the following semester.
REQUIREMENTS
Basic interest in and/or understanding of urban forestry or urban environmental issues.
Field experience in identifying tree species and assessing growing conditions is a plus, although interns will receive full training to conduct census.
Good working knowledge of Windows-based computers.
Familiarity with tabular data formats as found in Excel, Quattro, or Access.
Valid driver's license.
