  • Commissioner Benepe speaks at the Winter Festival 2002 at 12:00 PM on Saturday, February 9. The commissioner will also hold a press conference on the Asian Longhorned Beetle at that time. The press conference takes place on the stage at Central Park's East Meadow, located at 99th Street and 5th Avenue.
  • Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, February 9 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Carmine Recreation Center. This day honors the participation of females in sports, and will include instructional clinics, arts and crafts, workshops, demonstrations, video presentations, and a discussion panel. The event, designed for girls ages 6-16, is free and open to the public. Registration begins at 10:30 AM, and all participants receive a t-shirt, lunch, and giveaway bag. The recreation center is located at Clarkson Street and 7th Avenue South in Manhattan.
  • Operations received two of five new John Deere Gator utility carts. These small and flexible carts, funded by the City Parks Foundation (CPF), greatly enhance Parks' ability to inspect and maintain large parks, trails, and other areas which are not suited for pickups and larger vehicles. Gators costs nearly $12,000 each and come with dump bodies and winches.
  • The Department of Transportation (DOT) began repaving the parking lots at Clearview Golf Course and Cafe on the Green. DOT Street Lighting Division will enhance the lighting at those parking lots when they are finished. The Clearview Golf Course is located at 202-12 Willets Point Boulevard in Bayside, Queens.
  • Bid documents are available for contractor pick-up on Monday, February 11 for the reconstruction of the playground at Marion Street and Hopkinson Avenue in Brooklyn. Bids are due from contractors on February 27. The documents can be picked up from the Olmsted Center, located inside Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Flushing, Queens.
  • The Daily Plant, Parks' other daily newsletter, has a new feature called 'Plant Profile'. Every Friday, the Plant will profile one Parks employee who does something noteworthy both within and outside of Parks. The feature is intended to help bring the large and diverse Parks community closer together from across the five boroughs. The Plant can be read online at www.nyc.gov/parks.
