Parks Kicks Off New Turf Field At St. Michael’s Park
DATE: Saturday, December 6th, 2008
TIME: 11:00 a.m.
LOCATION: St. Michael's Park, 31st Avenue at the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, Queens
EVENT & PHOTO-OP: Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski and Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr., CB1 District Manager Lucille Hartman, Mick Tziazas, president of the Elefpheria Pan Cyprian Youth Soccer Club and youth soccers players will cut the ribbon on a new all-weather turf multi-use field at St. Michael’s.
DETAILS:
Thanks $4.2 million from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr., the former “dustbowl” at St. Michael’s field features a state-of-the-art synthetic turf baseball and soccer fields. New lighting was also installed to extend hours of playing time along with new bleachers, drinking fountains and a new chain link fence. These additions complement the existing playground, fitness equipment and handball courts.
St. Michael’s Park was created in the 1941 from land left over from the construction of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE). The construction of the BQE led to the development of 10 Parks properties along the Expressway in Queens.
