Green Roofs

Parks’ Five Borough Administrative Building green roofs (Randall's Island, Manhattan). Click to enlarge.

Randall’s Island is home to the Parks Department’s Five Borough Administrative Building, the central hub for our Citywide Operations division as well as our renowned Parks fleet. In 2007, Parks installed a green roof system with nearly 7,000 square feet of vegetation atop the Five Borough building. In order to research the best conditions for green roofs, we are testing out twelve varieties of plants, materials and soil compositions on this roof. While tending to any garden, let alone a huge one, obviously requires dedication, our Parkies are always up to the task!
