Know Before You Go

The City has temporarily closed four natural grass ballfields (Fields 5,6,7,8) at Red Hook Park after detecting elevated lead levels in the soil. The risk of exposure is small and we have taken immediate cautionary action by covering bare soil and reseeding parts of the outfield and adding clay to the infield, as well as adding clay to a nearby bleacher area. The area will be closed for 6-8 weeks to allow for sufficient grass growth. The City will conduct regular assessments of the impacted areas to ensure that treatments remain intact while developing a longer-term solution. As a reminder, parents should have children wash their hands whenever they come in from playing outdoors. The Health and Parks Departments will continue to work together to make sure New Yorkers have safe, accessible places to exercise.
