Mayor Bloomberg Lights Up Prospect Park For The Holidays

Energy-Efficient LEDs Used in Special Holiday Lighting Installation

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg tonight flipped the switch on a holiday lighting installation at Grand Army Plaza in Prospect Park. LEDs, energy-efficient and long-lasting lights that are environmentally friendly, are being used to illuminate the Bailey Fountain and a tree underneath the Sailors and Soldiers’ Memorial Arch at Grand Army Plaza. Lighting of the Bailey Fountain includes a wave-shaped structure to create the effect of flowing water. Lighting of the tree features a patchwork quilt of colors. The lighting installation will be in place through January 14, 2008. Entertainment for the lighting ceremony was provided by the Fort Hamilton Marching Band and the All City High School Choir. Mayor Bloomberg was joined in turning on the lights by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and students from the Brooklyn Music School.

“This is the second year we’ve lit up Grand Army Plaza using energy-efficient light emitting diodes (LEDs),” said Mayor Bloomberg. “It’s a fantastic kickoff to the holidays, and there’s plenty to celebrate in New York City this season. It’s also a time to remember those less fortunate than ourselves, and to show kindness toward each other.”

“Once again, Brooklyn’s magnificent Grand Army Plaza and Bailey Fountain will be illuminated in the festive spirit of the season,” said Borough President Markowitz. “And this year the City gives a joyous gift to the environment as well, by using a spectacular ‘green’ LED display that says with a Brooklyn accent, Happy ‘Green’ Holidays!”

“We are pleased to light up Prospect Park in an environmentally friendly way,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “Prospect Park is the heart of Brooklyn and tonight’s lighting is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season.”

“Once again Grand Army Plaza looks fabulous glittering with beautiful lights for the holidays,” said Prospect Park Alliance President Tupper Thomas. “It’s wonderful that Mayor Bloomberg could return to Prospect Park to flip-the-switch on the lights, and help us bring extra sparkle and cheer to the holiday season in Brooklyn.”

The famed design team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux – who also designed Central Park – created the plan for Prospect Park in 1866. Visits to Prospect Park have increased from a low of 2 million in 1979 to over 8 million annual visits today. Kate Wollman Ice Skating Rink: CLOSED 2012-2013

The Kate Wollman Rink will NOT be open for ice skating this winter; 2012 - 2013. The parking lot will also remain closed this winter. Construction is continuing on Lakeside , a year-round destination for recreation, relaxation, and events. Ice skating will return with the completion of this exciting new project.
