Art has the unique ability to build communities and encourage educational development and growth. Taking cues from the upcoming Mad. Sq. Art exhibition, Ideas of Stone (Idee di pietra) by Italian artist Giuseppe Penone, the workshop will address concepts of form, color, pattern, and community collaboration. Modeled after Penone’s monumental 30-foot tall bronze tree sculptures, we will be creating our own “boulders” which will adorn the Mad. Sq. Community Tree.
Penone was an early proponent of Arte Povera, a movement which arose in the 1960’s and was comprised of artists who sought to dissolve divisions between man, nature, and art. These artists used natural materials in their work such as wax, wool, felt, cloth, stone, glass, cement, wood, rubber, metal, cement, and resin. Inspired by this movement, we will decorate our “boulders” with natural and recyclable materials. Together, each participant will contribute their own unique art piece to the communal tree which will come together to create an entirely new work of art!
*The workshop will take place rain or shine and is first-come, first-served.
**Please note that adult supervision is required.
