This Weekend In Parks
MillionTreesNYC Spring Planting Day
Saturday, October 19, 2013
Approximately 2,000 volunteers from all five boroughs will plant 20,000 trees in Rockaway Community Park in Jamaica Bay, during fall’s largest planting day.
As part of MillionTreesNYC, Parks is reforesting 2,000 acres of parkland to create new, ecologically healthy, multi-story forests. New forests help expand canopy cover in NYC, increasing the host of environmental benefits already provided by our urban forest.
It’s My Park Day
Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20, 2013
Volunteer events will be taking place all weekend citywide for the annual fall It’s My Park Day (IMPD). Activities are organized and led by local community groups and civic associations, with support from Partnerships for Parks. These community-led projects invite volunteers to paint park benches and fences, plant bulbs, remove debris, and beautify local parks. Many projects incorporate fun, free events, including tennis lessons, face painting, historic house tours, and performances, which help to engage new community members in local parks. This is the largest volunteer event for Parks, with thousands of volunteers coming out to complete over 100 projects in their neighborhood parks.
QUOTATION FOR THE DAY

Know Before You Go
There are currently 3 service interruptions affecting access within this park.
Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, this park is closed until further notice.
Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk
The area of Rockaway Beach from Beach 116th Street to Beach 109th Street will be temporarily closed as the US Army Corps of Engineers begins sand moving operations. Once work begins in this area, we expect the closure to last approximately one week.
More information about the Army Corps’ work to replenish Rockaway Beach is available on their NY District website.
Seba Playground will be closed to reconstruct the current Seba Tot Lot into a playground for children of all ages. The new design will enlarge the toddler area by adding a custom spray shower, seating, and two new tot play units. Additional play spaces will also be added for 5 to 12 year olds, and will include a large accessible play unit, a second spray shower and seating area. These two play areas will be joined by 15 additional swings for both age groups. The site will also feature an accessible drinking fountain, attractive plantings, and a bicycle rack.
Anticipated Completion: Spring 2014
