“The Department of Parks & Recreation is renewing our commitment to offering New Yorkers high quality, affordable fitness,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “Joining a Recreation Center gives you access to one of the best networks of facilities in the city, including indoor pools, running tracks and fitness rooms, all for 41 cents a day for adults. With 33 locations throughout the five boroughs, it’s your time, your place, your workout!”
Today, the fitness room at Hansborough received top of the line Life Fitness equipment including: two Treadmills; two Achieve Elliptical Cross Trainers; one Integrity Recumbent LifeCycle; one Optima Series Leg Extension machine; one Signature Adjustabable Decline Bench; one Hammer Strength Free Weight Arm Curl machine; two Hammer Strength lympic flat benches; and two Achieve Lifecycles.
Parks’ 33 Recreation Centers throughout the city house more than 1,000 pieces of strength and cardio equipment. A total of 224 of these pieces were added in the last two fiscal years. Citywide, the current out-of-service rate for fitness equipment in Recreation Centers is 1%, down from 6% in June, 2011.
West Bronx Recreation Center has operated as a youth only facility for the past ten months, and will open its doors to adults this week with a brand new weight and cardio rooms. On Tuesday, West Bronx will receive a delivery of: 3 Treadmills; 2 Elliptical Crosstrainers; 2 Achieve LifeCycles; 2 Integrity Recumbent Bikes; a Stair Climber; and a flat bench for lifting weights.
In addition, Lost Battalion in Queens; Red Hook and Brownsville in Brooklyn; and J. Hood Wright Recreation Center in Manhattan are the other focus sites in this initiative, each receiving a mini make-over of their fitness rooms.
In June, Parks will open a brand new Recreation Center in McCarren Park. The 19,200 square foot facility will be the City’s first new center since Al Oerter Recreation Center was opened in 2008.
