Commissioner Benepe today joined Deputy Bronx Borough President Aurelia Greene, Assembly Member Carl Heastie, and Council Member Larry Seabrook to cut the ribbon on $1.7 million in improvements to Campanaro Playground. Neighborhood children from Rosa’s Quality Daycare were also in attendance.
“Campanaro Playground was renovated with $1.7 million in Croton Mitigation Funds, thanks to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and the Municipal Water Finance Authority,” said Commissioner Benepe. “The community can enjoy a new spray shower and play equipment, renovated basketball and handball courts, and ADA accessibility throughout the playground at this neighborhood gem.”
The project includes a new spray shower, play equipment and seating. The existing basketball and handball courts were restored, the comfort station was upgraded to ADA compliance, and the entire site was regraded to provide ADA accessibility to all areas of the playground. Additionally, the planting area was expanded to allow greater stormwater capture.
The renovations were funded by $1.7 million in Croton mitigation fund, as part of a $200 million investment in Bronx parks, financed by mitigation funds from the construction of the Croton Water Filtration Plant through the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and the Municipal Water Finance Authority. To date, Parks has completed 31 Croton-funded construction projects totaling $64 million and 22 more projects totaling $63 million are currently in construction. There are 22 projects currently in the design/procurement process totaling $72 million.
