This playground was named in memory of David A. Fox (1951-1971) under a local law introduced by Council Member Theodore Silverman and signed by Mayor John V. Lindsay on December 22, 1971.

David Fox was born on June 9, 1951 and raised in Flatlands where he lived with his parents in the nearby Glenwood Houses. He was educated in Brooklyn at Public School 251 and Samuel J. Tilden High School which he attended for three years before transferring to Canarsie High School. He was a Boy Scout, a camp counselor, and a member of the Knights of Pythias. After briefly attending college in Wisconsin, Fox died of leukemia on February 22, 1971.
