FOUNTAIN OF THE FAIRS RESTORED TO LIFE AFTER DECADES OF INACTIVITY

Malcolm (Cinema) Pinckney
On Thursday, October 5, Commissioner Henry J. (StarQuest) Stern, Queens Borough President Claire (Queen Bee) Shulman, Assistant Commissioner for Queens Parks Edward (Labrador) Lewis, Chief of Operations Richard (Ricardo) Murphy, and Assistant Commissioner for Queens Parks Estelle (Unisphere) Cooper flipped the switch that turned on the spectacular Fountain of the Fairs in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The fountain was originally enjoyed by millions at the 1964-65 World's Fair. The reconstruction of the fountain is the culmination of a $3.4 million multifaceted project to upgrade over 32 acres of Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Water will again be flowing in this historic fountain, capping off a restoration project that truly makes Flushing Meadows Corona Park one of the crown jewels in New York's Emerald Empire.
The project included the restoration of the Passerelle Plaza, which is now adorned with beautiful mosaic images of both the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs. The Passerelle Plaza's restrooms have also been modernized and made handicap accessible. The lawn area located between the Fountain of the Fairs and the Passerelle Plaza, also part of this project, has been beautifully landscaped.

PARKS PLANTERS DONATED TO WOMEN'S SHELTER
Residents at the Lexington Avenue Armory Shelter for Homeless Women were treated with six large flower boxes filled with bright yellow Chrysanthemums and green ivy plants this week when several Parkies teamed up with the shelter's Director Oscar Mockridge to beautify the Armory's landscaping.
