SummerStage Presents: Típica 73 with guest: Adalberto Santiago / Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

7:00 p.m.9:00 p.m.

Típica ’73 began with a “Jam Session” Charanga (Flute/Violin) format in 1972 at an East Side club called “…and Vinnie’s.  Eventually, it evolved into a 3-horn conjunto (combo) with Adalberto Santiago as lead vocalist.  In 1975 Típica ’73 began recording “New Wave” Cuban music “La Candela,” “No Me Critiques,” and “La Escoba Barrendera”.  In 1976, after a split due to creative differences, Típica ’73 emerged with a new format, which included the addition of a Flute/Sax, a Violin and Tito Allen as lead vocalist.  Subsequent lead vocalists included Camilo Azuquita and José Alberto (El Canario).  José Alberto was the vocalist in 1978 when Típica ’73 recorded the historic LP “Intercambio Cultural” (Cultural Exchange) at EGREM studios in Havana, Cuba. In 1983, Típica ’73 disbanded due to pressure and blacklisting stemming from the trip to Cuba. After an occasional reunion gig, and under the co-direction of founding members, Johnny Rodríguez and Sonny Bravo, Típica ’73 finally returned to its Charanga (Flute/Violin) roots and is currently performing with that format.

The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra is a thrilling 11-piece salsa group which plays dynamic, dura arrangements of indie rock tunes we love.  No bananas in the hair; this is innovative, astonishing salsa with a new, vibrant aesthetic.  With an ever-evolving set list that includes songs by Arcade Fire, TV On The Radio, Spoon, M83, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Black Keys, and  many more, the WSO has taken the typical salsa form and infused it with a completely modern identity.  The explosive arrangements have established the band as a groundbreaking force in the New York underground, and has let to international acclaim for its completely new approach to the genre.  Led by percussionist/arranger Gianni Mano (from the Latin-funk legends Radio Mundial), and fronted by Argentinian chanteuse, Solange Prat, the WSO has found an audience among new and classic salsa lovers, quickly becoming one of the most popular bands in New York City.  The WSO has been featured recently in Rolling Stone Magazine (on the 2013 Latin Hot List), and on MTV Iggy, Telemundo, Univision, and on the nationally syndicated program LatiNation on Fox.
