PARK FACT:

By the time Robert Moses developed his plan for the park in the early 1930s, the southern East River waterfront was dotted with slaughterhouses, glass factories, power stations, and railroad yards.

Consisting of Grandmaster Caz, Almighty KG, JDL, Easy AD, DJ Charlie Chase and DJ Tony Tone, they set the standard for emceeing as they “rapped in a declamatory style over minimalist beats,” which proved that, “the basic repertory of clever, vigorously delivered self-mythologizing can make for entertaining hip-hop,” according to The New York Times. As they gained mainstream popularity, many groups battled them to gain street credibility and hip-hop supremacy. The Cold Crush Brothers released a number of singles, their most successful being “Fresh, Wild, Fly and Bold.” With a memorable stage presence that featured harmonies and melodies as they sang and rapped free-flowing lyrics to a beat, they took hip-hop to an international audience and continue to tour the US today.

Watch The Cold Crush Brothers as they perform in the East River Park bandshell, revisiting the scene of the iconic concert finale featured in Charlie Ahearn’s famed hip-hop movie, “Wild Style” that starred this legendary group and celebrates the birth of hip-hop culture.
