Chess-in-the-Park Rapid Open

Join us for the 13th Annual Chess-in-the-Park Rapid Open, an exciting day of all-ages outdoor chess competition. Grandmasters will play with challengers throughout the day and there will be chess puzzles for kids. Chess sets, trophies, medals, and other prizes to be awarded following the last round!

Rounds at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. Bring chess sets and clocks if you own them. Also featuring GM Speed Chess Match at 10:00 a.m.

Register in Advance! Limited to the first 500 Entrants.

To register for the tournament, email tournaments@chessintheschools.org, send a fax to (212) 564-5523, or visit the Chess-in-the-Schools website. You will need to provide name, section, phone number, email address, and USCF chess rating if applicable.

Competition Sections (subject to change if necessary)

Youth Unrated: open to unrated players under age 10
Teen Unrated: open to unrated players ages 10 to 15
Adult Unrated: open to unrated players ages 16 and over
Novice: open to players rated under 1000
Intermediate: open to players rated from 1000 to 1399
Open Championship: open to all

PlaygroundsEast 72nd St Playground

The East 72nd St Playground is closed for construction. It will reopen this summer. Central Park Conservancy is renovating the playground to improve its accessibility and connection to the park's landscape. Please visit the Central Park Conservancyfor more information.

ParkCentral Park

As of April 27, Central Park's Bow Bridge is closed to the public for structural work and a fresh coat of paint. The work is expected to last three to four months. Removing the old paint will require wrapping the bridge in a tent-like structure to prevent debris from falling into the water. Along with repainting, the work will include replacing the wooden decking, fixing several beams on the underside of the span, and reinforcing approaches at either end.
