The skate park and soccer field area at Bronx Park has been named September’s Park of the Month. Located at Bronx Park East and Britton Street, the 6,000 square-foot skate park features a smooth skating surface and modern equipment including a quarter pipe, bank ramps with ledges, a skate pyramid and grind rails. The synthetic turf soccer field has new line markings and goal posts. Both the skate park and field are surrounded by fences, which provide safety for spectators who gather to watch athletic completion on the field and ramps.
“While Bronx Park is perhaps best known as the home of the Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Garden, the park features numerous recreation areas that are community favorites,” said Commissioner Benepe. “The skate park and soccer field on the east side of the park are popular play areas for athletes and spectators alike. Whether you play with your right foot or left foot on the field, or ride goofy foot or mongo foot on the rails, there is something for everyone here at this recreational oasis within Bronx Park.”
On June 28, 2008, Commissioner Benepe joined State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, State Senator Jeffrey Klein, Assembly Member Naomi Rivera, Community Board 11’s District Manager John Fratta, and local youth skaters to cut the ribbon on the $1.4 million new skate park and renovated ballfield at Bronx Park.
The $1.4 million project was part of a $220 million investment in Bronx Parks funded by mitigation funds from the construction of the Croton Water Filtration Plant through the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and the Municipal Water Finance Authority.
Park of the Month introduces some of our greatest parks and recreation centers to curious New Yorkers and visitors alike. Visit www.nyc.gov/parks for more information about Bronx Park’s skate park and field and for an archive for past featured parks.
