BLUE SKIES FOR BROAD CHANNEL’S NEW PLAYGROUND
On Tuesday, August 23, Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe joined Council Member Joseph Addabbo to cut the ribbon on the new and improved East 17th Road Playground in Broad Channel, Queens. The bright blue skies matched not just the mood of the Parkies and local children present; it also matched the play equipment’s water theme. Play equipment—including slides, climbing equipment, and a mini bridge—shined bright blue in the sun, while playful dolphin decals adorned overhangs above. The playground’s design is a reference to its home, a quaint island community in Jamaica Bay.
"Up-to-date, engaging playgrounds and parks help keep our children active, healthy, and safe," said Commissioner Benepe. "This playground will benefit generations of our City’s most valuable resources: our children."
"This is a beautiful day for Broad Channel," said Council Member Addabbo, explaining how he first noticed the old playground was in a state of disrepair after community members pointed it out to him. He then worked with Parks to allocate $350,000 for a total redesign.
"This is how government should work," he added, encouraging residents to continue to work with elected officials and City agencies toward the betterment of their home town.
The renovation features new play equipment and swings, safety resurfacing, new pavement and fencing, game tables, drinking fountains, and benches. The project also included an extensive replanting component to spruce up and "releaf" the playground.
After the ribbon cutting ceremonies, local children tested the slides, and enjoyed face painting and temporary tattoos with several Playground Associates.
QUOTATION FOR THE DAY
"It is of great use to the sailor to know the length of his line, though he cannot with it fathom the depths of the ocean."
