Volunteer Saturdays at Battery Urban Farm

Saturday, August 16, 2014

10:00 a.m.1:00 p.m.

This event repeats on the 3rd Saturday of every month between 7/19/2014 and 9/20/2014.

Please note: This event has already taken place. Please use the Search options on the right to find upcoming events.

Join us monthly on third Saturdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm from May to September.

Projects are seasonal and vary from week to week, and could include weeding, mulching, trellising, path or fence maintenance, moving soil, or working with compost. Visit the Battery Urban Farm Community Programs page for exact dates and more information.

Saturday Open Volunteer Hours are for all ages, however volunteers under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.  Any volunteers under 18 must bring a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.

All volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing (boots if it has rained recently, layers in cool weather, a hat and sunscreen in the summer are strongly recommended). Please also bring a water bottle.

We will work in most weather, including light rain. The following conditions will constitute cause for automatic cancellation of volunteer hours: heavy-driving rain, flooding, thunder and lightning storms, and temperatures upwards of 93 degrees. For weather-related cancellations, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter (@thebatterynyc) accounts.

Portions of the Battery are closed for various improvements, including a connection between the Greenways along the Hudson River and the East River. The 12-acre site will feature a meandering bikeway and walkway through lushly planted perennial gardens; a reconstructed Battery Green, the large oval lawn that serves as a public assembly and performance area; restoration and relocation of 10 monuments to the perimeter for better placement and increased visibility; a protected and replanted woodland area; new paths, trees and seating surrounding the park, and upgraded paving, edging, furnishings and lighting.
Anticipated Completion: Spring 2015
