Van Cortlandt Park

Van Cortlandt House Museum invites children to come along on a weeklong discovery of history in their backyard at the “Adventures in Time” Summer History Camp.

While on their “Adventure in Time” at Van Cortlandt House, campers will discover the everyday life of an 18th century child as they play the Van Cortlandt children’s favorite games, try on period clothing, and make 18th century toys. Campers will also lend a hand with plantation chores such as churning butter, gathering wood and hauling water.

“Adventures in Time” will also explore the early years of the Revolutionary War as campers become soldiers in General George Washington’s army. All aspects of military life will be covered from “enlisting” in the army, for which they will receive a bonus, to pitching a wedge tent and setting up camp. Campers will also learn military drills, and hike up to the top of Vault Hill on reconnaissance just like their 18^th century counterparts who were stationed at the Van Cortlandt’s plantation during the Revolutionary War. 

Campers must bring their own brown bag lunch each day but snacks and water are provided.

"Adventures in Time" Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade in the Spring of 2013.  We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.
