Please note: This event has already taken place. Please use the Search options on the right to find upcoming events.

Come to Van Cortlandt House Museum this February and embark on an adventure back in time as we salute General George Washington at our Adventures in Time Winter Break Mini-Camp. Your child will learn about the Van Cortlandt family as we celebrate all things George.
Children will travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will craft a paper cocked hat and sign enlistment papers into the army using a quill pen and ink. Outdoor activities such as military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action depending on the weather. We’ll study Washington’s Rules of Civility and hold a festive birthday celebration for the General.
Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff and talented living history volunteers. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Winter Break Mini-Camp are designed in keeping with New York State 4th grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages 6 - 12.
Winter Break Mini-Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who will complete 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade (or the equivalent) in June of 2012. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Children are not required to attend all three days.

Know Before You Go
There are currently 2 construction projects taking place in this park that are affecting access to its amenities.
The Parade Ground cricket fields are closed for reconstruction. The northern section of the Parade Ground has been reconstructed and the ball fields are open. The Van Cortlandt Stadium field was also reconstructed and reopened. A new synthetic turf field for soccer and football has been installed in the stadium. The parade grounds will have cricket fields, soccer fields, and baseball fields with in-ground irrigation. A portion of the cross country running track will be resurfaced and realigned. This project will be built in two phases to allow the public use of some fields during construction.
Anticipated Completion: Fall 2012
The comfort station and maintenance building located at W. 242nd St. and Broadway is closed. This project will reconstruct the existing District Headquarters/Comfort Station, including the rehabilitation of the building exterior and roof. Enhancements include an ADA accessible ramp, new plumbing fixtures and accessories in the public restrooms and the staff restroom. Other work includes the upgrading of the ventilation system and lighting. Please pardon our appearance.
Anticipated Completion: Fall 2012
