Recreation Center 59 has been a vital community resource for much of the 20th century. First purchased by the City in 1906 for use as a playground, the land spanned mid-block lots from West 59th to West 60th Streets. At that time, the facility originally opened as the 60th Street Bathhouse. By 1942, the park had expanded to its present size.

Know Before You Go

This recreation center is closed for renovation. The 60th Street wing of the recreation center is being completely reconstructed with a new indoor pool, updated electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems, First Aid room, and improvements to the gymnasium and cardio room. A new addition to the building will also be constructed that will feature mens, womens and family locker rooms, a youth activities room, computer room, multi-purpose room, and aerobics and fitness rooms.
Anticipated Completion: Fall 2012
