Rockaway Park, Queens

Performance Lawn
The east and west phases of the Rockaway PlaNYC regional park project

PlaNYC Project Overview

Located along a mile-long stretch of beach at the eastern end of the Rockaway peninsula, the Rockaway regional park project area includes park property that was never fully developed. The PlaNYC initiative presents the opportunity to make the most of the beachfront setting to provide much needed park facilities for the rapidly growing residential community.

In keeping with Mayor Bloomberg’s vision for a greener New York, the redeveloped park will increase permeable surfaces, improving stormwater collection. In the East Park, a large parking lot will be transformed into a rolling lawn for passive recreation and viewing events at a new performance venue. Natural habitats and coastal dunes will be protected and enhanced. The project includes extensive tree plantings to provide shaded park areas.

Schedule: Fall 2010–Summer 2012

East Park: Beach 11–Beach 17 Street: Skateboard park, sports courts and playground, new performance space
West Park: Beach 28 Street–Beach 32 Street: Playgrounds, water play area, synthetic turf field, and accessible comfort station
