Proposed Sportime Randall’s Island Tennis Center Annex

Sportime, the operator of the Sportime Randall’s Island Tennis Center, is seeking an amendment to its license agreement with the Randall’s Island Park Alliance and NYC Parks, which, if approved, would facilitate the construction of the Sportime Randall’s Island Tennis Center Annex.

About Sportime

Sportime Randall’s Island Tennis Center is one of the largest tennis facilities in New York City available to NYC Parks tennis permit holders. Sportime also provides thousands of hours of free group indoor and outdoor tennis programming to hundreds of youth from surrounding communities as part of its community programming and scholarship programs.

About the Proposed Improvements

The Annex would include 9 tennis courts within 3 structures containing a total of approximately 66,500 gross square feet (gsf) to be located within a portion of existing Parking Lot E. The tennis court structures would have operable panels along the east and west sides that would be raised during warmer weather to provide natural cross-ventilation and to increase the visibility into the tennis courts. The tennis center annex would also include an approximately 4,800-gsf public support building, which would accommodate reception, viewing areas to the courts, vending machines, a facility administration office, a multipurpose room, restrooms, and equipment/storage rooms, in a lightweight steel frame structure with steel cladding and with HVAC systems. In addition, the proposed project would include improvements to other existing parking areas, including restriping of parking spaces and pedestrian pathway, lighting, and circulation improvements. Landscaping and a new rain garden for stormwater retention purposes would also as part of improvements at Parking Lot F.

Project Goals and Timeline

One of the central goals of the proposed expansion is to significantly enhance and provide additional tennis courts for the community and existing NYC Parks tennis permit holders. As per the terms of the existing agreement with NYC Parks, each year from May 1 through the day before Columbus Day, fifty percent of Sportime’s courts are available on a priority basis to NYC Parks tennis permit holders. Sportime will operate the entire tennis center (the existing twenty courts plus the proposed additional nine courts) in conformance with the existing concession license agreement, thereby providing NYC Parks tennis permit holders priority access to half of all courts from May 1 through the day before Columbus Day.

It is anticipated that the Proposed Project would be constructed and operational by Fall 2015. The Tennis Center Annex would be open weekdays from 6:30 am to 11:00 pm. It would create an estimated additional 30 to 40 new jobs, with Sportime committed to local hiring to the greatest extent possible. The 9 new courts would typically accommodate 18-36 players at any one time.
