The Meadow

The Meadow, lying south of the Orchard Beach pavilion, is a unique plant community resulting from its close proximity to the water table. Soil was scraped from the surface here to be used as topsoil and fill during the 1930s beach construction, leaving a shallow ground layer. The open space and plant diversity of bayberry shrubs, switchgrass, and sesame grass provides excellent wildlife habitat, especially for butterflies.
