Ocean Breeze Park

Improved new indoor track and field facility are part of Ocean Breeze Park?s improvements.

The new track and field facility will be within sprinting distance to the beach and boardwalk.

The indoor track facility will be capable of hosting competitions ranging from high school meets to collegiate championships.

The Parks and Department and Mayor Bloomberg broke ground on the field house at a ceremony in July 2010.

PlaNYC Project Overview

Ocean Breeze Park will soon boast a 2,500-seat field house, creating only the city’s third indoor track and field facility thanks to $70.0 million in PlaNYC funding from Mayor Bloomberg. Once open in 2013, the facility will become a premier destination for athletic events, drawing competitors from around the region. The Parks Department worked with Staten Island track clubs and community groups throughout the planning process. An indoor parking lot will accommodate 160 cars. The hydraulic-banked track can be converted from six to eight lanes. A warm-up area will feature weight and cardio rooms.

In keeping with the sustainability goals of PlaNYC, Parks is seeking a LEED Silver rating for the building, and has incorporated features to conserve energy and water into the design. Rainwater captured from the field house roof will be directed to a nearby wetland for habitat development. The sand dunes, wetlands, grasslands and shrub forest comprising much of Ocean Breeze Park will be preserved.
