Park and Facility Closures

ParkHighbridge Park

As of Monday, October 12, The High Bridge will be open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. High Bridge hours will change seasonally.

Skate ParksMullaly Skate Park

Anticipated Completion: Winter 2016

Mullaly Skate Park is closed Sunday, December 27 through Sunday, January 10. During the closure, please utilize River Avenue Skate Park, located at East 157th Street and River Avenue.(Please note, this site is unsupervised.)We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause for daily park users.

ParkNorth Brother Island

Access to North Brother Island is restricted because of safety concerns and its present capacity as a water bird nesting habitat. Through approximately the fall of 2016, NYC Parks will not be allowing access to the island. During that time, Parks will be managing a natural resources project, including securing several hazardous conditions, conducting extensive storm debris cleanup, and removing a number of hazardous leaning trees in addition to restoring harbor heron habitat. For this reason, Parks is unable to accommodate requests to visit North Brother Island at this time.

ParkSoundview Park

Anticipated Completion: Summer 2015

Portions of this park will be closed to bring an exciting and playful space for children, teenagers and adults to play. The new Metcalf Playground will bring an exciting and playful space for children, teenagers and adults to play and recreate.

BathroomsBill Brown Memorial Playground

Anticipated Completion: Summer 2016

Bill Brown Memorial Playground is under construction. This project will reconstruct the comfort station.

BeachesConey Island and Coney Island Boardwalk

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

Portions of the boardwalk are closed to reconstruct the street ends of Brighton 2nd Street and West 33rd Street in Coney Island, Brooklyn in order to provide new ADA compliant ramps to the boardwalk, sitting areas, new planted areas and lighting.

ParkDome Playground

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

Dome Playground is currently closed for reconstruction.

ParkFort Greene Park

Anticipated Completion: Summer 2016

The Willoughby Avenue entrance and pathways are open to the public. Perimeter chain link fencing remains through spring 2016 to allow new lawns to establish. This project improved the entrance, park paths, landscape elements, and drainage issues in Fort Greene Park.

PlaygroundsGlenwood Playground

Anticipated Completion: Summer 2015

A portion of Glenwood Playground is currently under reconstruction.

ParkGravesend Park

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

Gravesend Park is under reconstruction. This project will demolish the hockey rink, expand the playground and reconstruct the court area and ballfields in Gravesend Park.

Recreation CentersHerbert Von King Cultural Arts Center

Effective April 11, 2015, the Herbert Von King Cultural Arts Center will be closed until renovations are complete. Parks will continue to serve the Bed-Stuy community by offering quality activities during the exciting renovations to the Center. As part of this preserved programming, there will be a host of recreational activities on weekdays after school in April and May, weekends in May and June, and weekdays in July and August. The programs will range from fitness classes and arts, to bike riding and games for all ages.

BathroomsLeif Ericson Park & Square

Anticipated Completion: Fall 2015

The park remains open while the construction of the comfort station is ongoing.

Tennis CourtsMarine Park

Marine Park's tennis courts will be closed for the season due to construction.

ParkMcCarren Park

The tennis courts at McCarren Park are currently being resurfaced. During this time, a limited number of courts will be available for play. Tennis court reservations are currently suspended; however, permit holders are welcome to use the available courts on a first-come, first-served basis.

ParkProspect Park

Anticipated Completion: Winter 2015

The Prospect Park Well House is under reconstruction in order to build a new composting latrine. The park remains open while the building gets reconstructed.

ParkRed Hook Recreation Area

NYC Parks is committed to making sure all parks are safe and healthy environments. Parks is continuing to work with EPA as they test the Redhook Ballfields for contamination. In the interim, we expect softball/baseball fields 5, 6, 7 and 8 will be closed until a clean-up plan is completed, and soccer fields 1, 2, 6 and 9 will be tested further.

ParkSt. John's Recreation Center

Anticipated Completion: Summer 2015

The seating area in the playground behind St. John's Recreation Center will be renovated and the seats have been removed. This project will reconstruct the outdoor sitting area adjacent to the recreation center in St. John’s Park. The sitting area will act as the central hub for the many recreational activities the park offers, as well as a place for rest and passive recreation. In addition to views of the colorful mural on the center’s wall, park goers will enjoy new benches, fencing, picnic tables, game tables and chairs, a drinking fountain, flowering trees and various ornamental plantings.

ParkTaaffe Playground

Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, this park is closed until further notice.

PlaygroundsWingate Park

Anticipated Completion: Summer 2015

A portion of the playground at Wingate Park is closed for reconstruction.

ParkAsser Levy Playground

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

The fitness equipment, ping pong tables, and a portion of the track are temporarily closed at Asser Levy Playground in order for the Department of Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System to build a protective floodwall. The multi-purpose field and two-thirds of the track will remain open during construction.

ParkCrack Is Wack Playground

Anticipated Completion: Winter 2020

Keith Haring's Crack is Wack mural will not be available for viewing during reconstruction of the Harlem River Drive, expected to be completed by the end of 2019. It is currently enclosed by a protective shelter.

PlaygroundsDry Dock Playground

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

Dry Dock Playground is under construction. This project will reconstruct the play equipment, security lighting, and perform additional site work.

ParkFort Tryon Park

Anticipated Completion: Fall 2016

The path and stairs in Fort Tryon Park that lead to the Cloisters are currently closed for repairs. The construction project is in the bidding cycle. Railings and lighting will be installed as part of the project, which is anticipated to go into construction in the fall of 2016.

Recreation CentersHansborough Recreation Center

The main phone line is currently out of service. Please call (212) 234-9605 while the line is being repaired.

ParkHighbridge Park

Nature CentersInwood Hill Nature Center

Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, this facility is closed until further notice.

Recreation CentersRecreation Center 54

Yoga classes with Terry are canceled through May 1, 2016. Classes will resume on May 2 at 8:30 a.m.

Recreation CentersRecreation Center 54

The locker rooms will be closed for upgrades on Friday, April 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The pool will be closed for upgrades on April 29 from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

ParkRiverside Park

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

The northernmost A-dock at the 79th Street Boat Basin is currently closed to public access for structural enhancements. The dock will be further supported with non-wood pilings and a new wave screen.

ParkStuyvesant Square

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

Stuyvesant Square Park is under construction. This project will reconstruction the east section fence and perimeter sidewalk.

ParkTrygve Lie Plaza

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

The sitting area at Trygve Lie Plaza is currently under reconstruction.

Kayak/Canoe Launch SitesWest Harlem Piers

Anticipated Completion: Winter 2017

The kayak launch at West Harlem Piers is closed indefinitely for repairs.

ParkEvergreen Park

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

Evergreen Park is currently under construction. This project will demolish the bocce and shuffleboard courts, install play equipment, and reconstruct the spray shower.

Tennis CourtsFlushing Meadows Corona Park

The tennis courts at Flushing Meadows Corona Park are currently closed due to construction. The tennis courts will re-open on Saturday, July 2, 2016.

ParkHighland Park

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

Natural Turf ball fields 1 and 2 in Highland Park are currently under reconstruction.

ParkHoward Von Dohlen Playground

Anticipated Completion: Fall 2015

The park will be closed to reconstruct the existing playground to meet modern safety standards, provide for ADA accessibility, and correct existing site drainage problems. This much needed renovation will include new play equipment for young children, new safety surfacing, new play swings and a new spray shower. Additionally, new park benches will be installed and planting areas will be expanded to add raised tree pits and additional greenery to the site. This project will also construct a new comfort station whose design includes a green roof and radiant heat flooring. A new drinking fountain will be installed. Both the comfort station and drinking fountain will be ADA compliant.

ParkHoward Von Dohlen Playground

Anticipated Completion: Spring 2016

Von Dohlen Playground is currently under construction. This project will reconstruct the asphalt ballfield and construct an adult fitness and skate area.

Tennis CourtsWillowbrook Park

The tennis courts at Willowbrook Park Tennis Courts have been closed indefinitely in order to repair the asphalt.

Roller HockeyWolfe's Pond Park

Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, the Wolfe's Pond hockey rink is closed until further notice.
