Parks Celebrates Arbor Day By Expanding The Trees & Sidewalks Program In Cypress Hills

DATE: Friday, April 27th, 2012

TIME: 11:00 a.m.

LOCATION: Hale Avenue, Between Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue, BROOKLYN

EVENT & PHOTO-OP: Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe will join Council Member Erik Dilan to celebrate the 140th Arbor Day, and an allocation of $1.25 million by the Council Member, to supplement the Trees and Sidewalks program throughout District 37. After the speaking program, there will be a tree watering and cement-pouring ceremony.

DETAILS: The funding allocation will be used to repair severe root damage sustained by sidewalks located at 373 residential properties in the area. Repairs generally involve removing damaged concrete, expanding the tree pit and installing resilient concrete in the surrounding sections of sidewalk in order to accommodate future root growth. This work not only makes for a safer sidewalk for pedestrians, but helps to ensure healthy growth for the 486 trees affected.

Arbor Day was first celebrated on April 10, 1872 with the planting of an estimated one million trees. Within a decade, the holiday spread internationally. Each year on the last Friday in April, trees are planted in communities around the world.
