The Parks Opportunity Program (POP)—one of the largest and most successful transitional employment programs in the country?is going green! Since its inception in 1994, POP has helped over 10,000 New Yorkers transition from public assistance to secure permanent, private-sector jobs. POP provides its participants with training, counseling, education, and job-search assistance while giving them the opportunity to develop their professional skills as a paid Parks employee.
Now, more than ever, POP is going green with its specialized program—POP Education Horticulture—to train participants for careers in horticulture, forestry, and gardening. Through a combination of coursework, fieldwork, and internships with our nonprofit partners, POP Education Horticulture participants acquire a variety of specialized skills including plant & tree identification, mulching, pruning, flower bed installation, and fertilization techniques. Training participants graduate from the program with the skills they need to secure sustainable jobs in the city’s growing “green” sector.
