Stream Velocity at New York Botanical Garden

2004

Stream velocity at the Botanical Garden was measured to pinpoint velocity barriers to fish passage as part of the anadromous fish reintroduction feasibility assessment. During periods of high flow, alewife eggs and juveniles can be washed downstream. Adult fish may be unable to withstand sustained or very strong currents.

Methods

Six transects were set up perpendicular to the current in the area downstream of the Snuff Mill Dam. Streamflow was measured at 0.6 of total depth, or was measured at 0.2 of total depth and 0.8 of total depth and averaged.
