Urban Forestry

GreenApple Corps works to improve the health of our urban forest, which includes more than 600,000 and growing street trees in New York City. These trees, which grow between the sidewalk and street, face extremely difficult urban conditions, and it is the goal of the GreenApple Corps to help communities understand the importance of these trees to their communities and to teach them how to keep the trees healthy.

Working with school and community groups, Corps members clean around, cultivate, mulch, prune, weed, and water street trees in high?need neighborhoods and neighborhoods with newly planted trees. This effort is part of the city’s Trees for Public Health (TPH) initiative, which aims to reduce the pollutants that trigger respiratory disorders and contribute to healthier living standards.

The Urban Forestry section of the program overlaps with the Environmental Education section for an exciting set of Street Tree Stewardship lessons. These lessons send members to schools in high-need neighborhoods, where they educate students about the importance of street trees and bring them outside for hands-on experience working with the trees in their neighborhoods.
