Music for Afterschool

This will give kids an opportunity to explore music in the Indian tradition, known as raga and tala.  Unlike most western musical classes, in Indian music students do not refer to written music but rather they learn the music by repeating what they hear.  Each class begins with repetitive practice of scales and rhythm patterns.  With the assistance of a harmonium, classes are based on vocal music, which can later be applied to any instrument.  4-5 guest musicians will present new instruments every other week (i.e. tabla, sirar, flute, sarod, sarangi).  They will also teach the students a new song each time that the students will in turn practice and present the following week.
