Scholarship Road Race at Freshkills Park
Sunday, November 10, 2013
10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
On Sunday, November 10, in conjunction with the Parks Department and the Department of Sanitation, the Staten Island Athletic Club will be holding the first ever race at Freshkills Park. The Scholarship Cross-Country Race, a 5.8-mile race that traverses the hills and valleys of Freshkills Park, promises participants a sweeping 360-degree view of the Manhattan skyline, the rolling hills of Staten Island, and the New Jersey Highlands.
The purpose of the race is to provide scholarships for deserving high school seniors living on the Island. Since 2003, the Staten Island Athletic Club through the Scholarship Cross-Country Race has raised over $25,000, money that has helped many high school students pay off their college expenses.
The first 125 registered runners of the race will receive a race T-shirt. All runners will be given free coffee and pastries courtesy of Starbucks of Hylan Boulevard. About a dozen businesses from Staten Island and Brooklyn will be sponsoring the event. L.A. Fitness of Travis will be awarding the top finishers a 3-month membership to their gym.
