NYC Parks will present a screening of insect-themed animated shorts for children, in conjuction with the Notched Bodies: Insects in Contemporary Art exhibition on view through November 13.
Child & Firefly (2009, 3 min)
Based on the 19th century Urdu poem Jugnu, Child & Firefly illustrates an encounter between a curious boy and a firefly that serves as a reminder to be more considerate of other species, each other and nature. Directed by Glenn Gear, produced by Atif Siddiqi.
Blackfly (1991, 5 min)
This animated film recounts Canadian folk singer Wade Hemsworth’sbattles with the pesky black fly during a summer of surveying in Nort hern Ontario. Directed by Christopher Hinton, produced by William Pettigrew, National Film Board of Canada. Oscar Nominee, Animated Short Film, 1991
The Magic of Anansi (2001, 7min)
This animated short tells the story of Anansi, a little spider who is tired of being snubbed by other the jungle animals. As Anansi plots and schemes to change things, he realizes he can't gain respect by putting others down. Directed by Jamie Mason, National Film Board of Canada.
Luna (2011, 7min)
A caterpillar inside a streetlight falls in love when he receives an unexpected visit from a Luna moth. Directed by Donna Brockopp, produced by Catherine Winder, Rainmaker Entertainment.
Roberto the Insect Architect (2005, 12 min)
Roberto, a termite who likes to build with wood, not eat it, sets off for the big city to pursue his dream of becoming an architect. Based on the book written and illustrated by Nina Laden. Directed by Galen Fott and Jerry Hunt, voiced by Sean Hayes, produced by Grundoon and Weston Woods Studios.
