From the early photographs of Julia Margaret Cameron to contemporary work by Tina Barney, Thomas Struth, Rineke Dijkstra, and others, photographers have made use of gardens and other natural settings to make portraits of individuals and groups. Class participants engage with the magnificent landscapes, plants and trees of Wave Hill in a hands-on workshop that explores the nuances of portrait photography in a natural setting. Working alongside nature photographer Benjamin Swett, participants photograph each other individually and in groups, making use of on-camera fill flash, reflectors and natural light to produce original portraits for review and discussion by the class and with the instructor. All levels welcomed. Registration required, online at www.wavehill.org, by calling (718) 549-3200 x305 or at the Perkins Visitor Center. Series continues May 16, 30.
