Shred your personal papers for free at a location near you! Free paper shredders donated by Staples for the first 4 people to arrive with their papers at each location.*

Join Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), the Mayor's Office of the Criminal Justice Coordinator (CJC), Department of Parks & Recreation, and Department of Sanitation for the City's 4th Annual Shred Fest to shred old documents and get tips on preventing identity theft.

What should you shred?

  • Bank statements that are at least one year old and do not contain tax-related information
  • Pay stubs (only after you receive your Form W-2)
  • Credit card applications
  •  Any other documents that contain your Social Security Number, account numbers, password/PIN information, your birth date, private contact information, and signature

*New York City government employees are NOT eligible to receive a free shredder. If more than three people are present at a Shred Fest site before DCA/CJC volunteers arrive, volunteers will use their best judgment to determine paper shredder recipients. Recipients will fill out a form to confirm they are not City government employees.

Special thanks to Brink's Document Destruction, Code Shred, ProShred Security, Shred Services Inc., and USA Shred for donating the mobile shredding trucks for the event, and to Staples for their generous donation of personal shredders.
