Leave your baggage at home and bring a picnic blanket out to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for Target Passport Fridays 2010, the 6th season of the Queens Museum of Art’s annual outdoor summer festival of international music, dance and film. This year’s journey around the globe begins in South Africa in honor of the World Cup, and includes stops in Colombia, Ecuador, South Korea, Taiwan, the Middle East, India, and Mexico. Each evening begins with live dance and music performances followed by the feature film screening after sunset.
Dance: Carioca Capoeira: Mestre Carioca and his group, with special guests Mestres Bom Jesus and Ariranha, present impressive live feats of Brazilian martial arts accompanied by live music.
Music: Internationally renowned samba dancer and teacher Quenia Ribeiro will get everyone in the audience feeling like they are in carnaval in Rio!
Film: The Man Who Bottled the Clouds (Lirio Ferreira, Brazil, 2008, 110 min. Documentary, Portuguese with English subtitles). A host of personalities including Caetano Veleso and Gilberto Gil reminisce about the life and work of songwriter, lawyer, and congressman Humberto Teixeira-aka “The Doctor of Baião” - the author of such classic Brazilian popular songs as Asa Branca (White Wing). This beautifully produced film brilliantly captures the feel of Brazilian life in the 1940s with musical performances, archival footage, and lively conversations.
