Canoeing

Fort Totten Park , CROSS ISLAND PKWY. BET. TOTTEN AVE. AND 15 RD. (Queens), Queens

See the sights for Fort Totten, the Throggs Neck Bridge and Little Neck Bay and learn the basics of canoeing. Weather permitting. Space is limited. First-come, first-served. Ages 8 and up. Meet at front entrance to park.

Kayaking/Canoeing/Paddleboats

You may use any of Parks' recreational spaces, except tennis courts, without a permit. However, if a permit holder arrives with a valid permit in hand, you must vacate the field or court. An individual must have a season permit or single-play ticket to use Parks' tennis courts.

Organized play (leagues) requires a permit. Click here for an application and more information about permits.

Alice Austen House/Buono Beach

The park, historic house and sandy beach are an appealing destination and offer an excellent departure point to explorethe Lower New York Bay. A portage of about 400 feet from street parking.

Caution: Watch for gas pipeline to the west, jagged rock at low tide and significant currents and commercial shipping traffic in the Narrows.

 

Barretto Point Park

Launch from a concrete ramp on a cobble beach near the parking lot or a sandy cove at the east end of the park.

Caution: Strong tidal currents and heavy traffic in the main shipping channel; restricted access on both Brother Islands (bird sanctuaries) and prohibited at Rikers Island (City's Largest Jail).

Bayside Marina

CROSS ISLAND PKWY & LITTLE NECK BAY (Queens) | Map it

A concrete ramp near the marina and fishing pier offers direct access to Little Neck Bay; the wetlands of Alley Pond Park and Udall's Cove are a short paddle away. Parking and footbridge access at 28th Avenue.

Caution: Landing at high tide can be difficult heading south towards Alley Pond Park due to extensive riprap

Access to Norton Basin and the eastern end of Jamaica Bay is provided by this beach lauch.

Caution:Lauch perpendicular to shore, as large, jagged rocks protude along the shoreline; extensive mud flats at low tide

Brooklyn Bridge Park (Dumbo)

The Ramp launch opens into a protected embayment that is sheltered from currents and offers striking views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Harbor and Lower Manhattan skyline. Free walk-up kayaking offered seasonallly by the Brooklyn Park Boathouse. Car drop off is at Doughty Street and nearby street garage parking.

Caution: A pilling field just north of the launch. Strong swells and breaking waves in the busy  East River.  

 

Central Park - Loeb Boathouse

Hours: Weather-permitting, opens daily at 10 a.m. with last boat rentals at 5:30 p.m. The boats must be returned by 6:30 p.m. Rentals are on a first-come, first-serve basis.  
Types of Boats: Rowboats (up to 4 people per boat); nine-foot Ocean Kayaks  
Fees: $12 first hour, $3 each additional 15 minutes. $30 cash deposit required per boat.

Clason Point Park

A concrete ramp provides access to marshes of Pugsley Creek, the East River, the Hutchinson River Drainage, and Long Island Sound. Portage is 150 feet.

Caution: Strong currents in the East River, heavy commercial traffic, and lots of broken glass in Launch Area.

Concrete Plant Park

WESTCHESTER AVENUE OR BRUCKNER BOULEVARD (Bronx) | Map it

A concrete launch ramp at a reclaimed cement manufacturing site on the Bronx River. Limited street parking and a long carry from either the Westchester Ave. ( .25 mi.) or Bruckner Blvd. ( .15 mi.) entrance.

Caution: A boom spanning the river collects debris and helps prevent motorized traffic from going north; to the south are strong currents and a working shipping channel.
